Day 1 of 20 · Words of Truth

Day 01 — Truth

Words of Truth — Thematic foundation: Isaiah 5:20 (KJV).

Primary reading: John 17:13–19; John 14:1–7

1. Word and question

Truth is what accords with God's character and with reality as he knows and reveals it. God's Word is trustworthy, and Jesus Christ makes the Father known without deception. Today’s question is: Have I confused truth with personal conviction, and how does Jesus ground truth in the Father’s Word?

We can speak accurately about an event and still use that accuracy dishonestly. We can also defend correct doctrine while refusing the obedience it requires. Biblical truth concerns both what we confess and whether we live honestly before God.

2. Scripture and context

Read John 17:13–19, with John 14:1–7. On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus prays for disciples who will remain in a hostile world. His request that the Father sanctify them through truth concerns their consecration for holy living and mission. He sends them into the world; he does not train them to escape all contact with it.

In John 14, Jesus answers Thomas's uncertainty about the way to the Father. His declaration that he is the way, truth, and life is a claim about his unique person and saving work. It is more than a general encouragement to be sincere. Together these passages locate Christian confidence in the Son and the Father's Word, rather than in our ability to win an argument.

3. Modern distortion

One familiar distortion treats personal conviction as the final measure of truth: if a belief feels authentic, questioning it becomes an offense. Personal experience deserves careful listening, but an experience and its interpretation are not identical. Two incompatible claims do not become equally true because both speakers are sincere.

Another distortion appears among Christians when we treat our preferred teacher, political camp, or first interpretation as incapable of error. Scripture's authority does not transfer automatically to everyone who quotes it. Refusing correction can masquerade as standing for truth.

4. Biblical truth versus misconception

Misconception: Objective truth requires absolute certainty about every question. Biblical truth: God knows perfectly; we know dependently and can misunderstand. Humility about our interpretations is compatible with confidence in God's revelation.

Misconception: Loving people means avoiding claims they may reject. Biblical truth: Ephesians 4:15 joins truth with love. Neither deception that comforts nor cruelty that happens to state a fact reflects Christ. Faithful speech asks whether the statement is accurate, necessary, and offered for the other's good.

5. Why it matters

A shifting standard cannot sustain confession or forgiveness: we will keep redefining the offense to protect ourselves. God's truth gives us a stable place to stand and a reason to repent. Because Christ receives sinners, admitting that we were wrong need not threaten our identity. Truth becomes a means of freedom from self-defense.

6. Examine yourself

Which belief do I protect from serious biblical examination? Have I shared an accusation because it supported my side before checking whether it was true? When someone corrects me accurately, do I receive it as help or treat it as disloyalty?

7. Application and prayer

Choose one claim you have repeated recently. Check its evidence and distinguish the claim from your interpretation. If you spread something false, correct it with the people who heard it. Then read John 17:13–19 again and identify one way truth should change your conduct today.

Prayer: Father, your Word exposes what I would rather defend. Give me confidence in Christ and humility about myself. Forgive my careless speech and selective listening. Make me truthful in private, patient in disagreement, and willing to be corrected. Amen.

8. Study further

Read Psalm 119:137–144 for the relationship between God's righteousness and his trustworthy commands; Titus 1:1–3 for truth grounded in the God who does not lie; and Ephesians 4:25–32 for truthfulness within the church. Ask how each passage connects belief with behavior. Related studies: Knowledge, Wisdom, Love.
